What is the difference between PV and solar panels?

“PV” stands for photovoltaic, which is a technology that converts sunlight into electricity through a process called the photovoltaic effect. A photovoltaic cell, also known as a solar cell, is a basic component of a PV system and is made from a semiconductor material, such as silicon.

“Solar panels” is a more general term that refers to the larger panels that are made up of many photovoltaic cells. Solar panels can be used in various types of solar energy systems, including photovoltaic (PV) systems, solar hot water systems, and concentrating solar power (CSP) systems.
