How DC isolator switches protect photovoltaic power station safety

What is a DC Isolator Switch?

DC isolator switches, as the name suggests, are switches that isolate DC. It is mostly used in photovoltaic power station systems to cut off the arc generated by DC to avoid dangerous accidents and ensure safe operation.

How DC isolator switches protect photovoltaic power station safety?

1. When installing a PV system, if the installer does not first disconnect the inputs to the panels and the inverter, the DC power will be connected to the DC side of the inverter when wiring and plugging in the DC terminals, which can result in personal electrocution as well as damage to the inverter and back-end equipment;

2. In photovoltaic power station, the inverter is the “core hub”, and in order to ensure sufficient power generation time, the inverter is no start-stop button, as long as there is  sunlight (even in cloudy and rainy weather) solar panels are able to generate electricity, the inverter that is, automatic work. However, this also poses a problem. When replacing or repairing the inverter, even though the AC side has been disconnected by the AC circuit breaker installed, the DC side is always energized. In this case, the inverter is susceptible to electric shock and equipment damage if it cannot isolate the DC current from the panels;

3. There exists a number of inverters that are not electrically isolated internally, and there is a possibility of backflow from the AC side to the DC side, which can lead to electrocution hazards if the DC power cannot be physically isolated during maintenance.

Photovoltaic DC disconnect switches that isolate the DC current between the inverter and the panels. By physically isolating the AC switch from the DC switch, all segments of the PV plant are more safely protected.
