What does a combiner box do?

A combiner box, also known as a solar combiner, is a component used in photovoltaic (PV) solar energy systems to combine the electrical output from multiple solar panels into a single conduit for connection to the inverter or other electrical equipment. The combiner box is essentially a junction box that protects the electrical connections and provides a centralized location for wiring and fusing.

A combiner box is used in larger solar energy systems, where multiple strings of solar panels are connected in parallel. By combining the electrical output from multiple strings of panels into a single conduit, the combiner box helps to reduce the number of electrical connections and simplify the wiring and installation of the system.

The combiner box typically includes fuses or circuit breakers to protect against overcurrent and short circuits, and may also include monitoring and diagnostic features, such as current and voltage measurement, to aid in troubleshooting and system performance analysis.
